THE NUM-NUM TRAIL RACE

The Results – Stunning but X-Large Difficult

Wow what a run... through gorges, across escarpments, waterfalls, swing bridges and indigenous forests. This trail gets you into secret places that you couldn’t imagine were there from the road. Everyone who participated could not believe how stunning the trail is! Within the first 10 minutes it was clear that the first Num-Num Trail would be one tough cookie to finish for both the 15km and 43km runners. This route was incredibly technical and challenging.

RESULTS – 43KM POWER CHALLENGE
Six people complete the full 43kms. The route was so challenging that the people who did 33km were (rightly) incredibly proud of their achievements. The winners were:

Place

Women

Men

1st

Elsie Bezuidenhout – 08:41:48

Shamus Kreuger – 08:47:46

2nd

Meg McAuliffe – 09:45:26

Dustin Graham – 09:45:15

The overall winner was a woman, Elsie! But Shamus opted to take a slightly longer route and can technically say he did 44km and is in a league of his own.

RESULTS – MY LONGEST 15KM EVER!

Most of the contestants on this route decided to thoroughly enjoy themselves and took lots of detours to enjoy the scenery, but Richard, Stuart, Debbie and Susan gunned it for the finishing post!

THE VIBE
The organisers and sponsors of the Num-Num Trail Race were gobsmacked by how much fun this was. There were only 28 participants so we all got to know each other well and had a great social time – despite the nip in the air and the sore everything. A potjie of gluhwein certainly helped keep the cold at bay and the laughs going. A few magic tricks from David Felix wowed the crowd. Tummy’s were filled with hearty country fare. “Thank you and your team for the best weekend that I have had in a very long time! It was as if I was at a large family gathering...”

KINETICS.CO.ZA
Finishers wasted no time in getting to the gazebo of the Kinetic’s team for a desperately needed rub down. The skilled Kinetic body magicians worked their magic on the tired legs while handing out some sound advice on injury prevention and cure. It was a relief for the organisers too as people with various injuries got advice at the start of the race. We came through the event injury free, well except for Anthony who got maliciously attacked by a Common Cabbage tree and came out with a miniscule bruise on his forehead. They are going to be supporting lots more trail running events in the future so keep an eye out for them and definitely book their AMAZING sports massages. Here is their website: www.kinetics.co.za

YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY
Overall everyone said this was a well organised event with a lot of care and attention to detail. The Num-Num Team had so much fun hosting this that there will definitely be a 2012 race. Our learnings were:
• This should be renamed The Num-Num Challenge. We have to shorten the routes and build in more open space for runners to stretch their legs
• Signs for hikers don’t work for runners and we need additional signs for the speedmeisters
• Make it cheaper and simpler so more people can participate. The catering got a huge thumbs up but boy is it difficult picking up a 3kg trout when you need to print bibs.
• Don’t let The Lumley’s feed Donna Jugermister before the prize giving is completed

COMMENTS FROM OUR HEROS

It was truly the most amazing experience and definitely goes down as one of the toughest things I’ve ever done! I think we spent too much time enjoying the beauty! Couldn’t believe that we have such a beautiful place so close to us and we’ve never been there!

It is DEFINITELY one of the MOST SCENIC routes .. it was AWESOMELY beautiful, just X-Large difficult .

I truly felt we got value for money considering the food you provided and the stunning accommodation.

I just cannot say thank you enough, it was an incredible experience for me. It was hard, but it was the most amazing feeling when I finished ... it will stay with me forever.

Fantastic area to stage a run. Accommodation facilities where excellent. General organization, fun factor etc.. was great. When not getting lost, the course was in good condition. Ladders, paths etc all in great condition/working order. Too little opportunity to run.. You may consider changing the route to include some more areas that allow for running. It is a balance. Don’t remove all the fun parts.
Drop the Lynx route and stick to just the Num-Num route which I believe is 36k’s. That will still be tough but do-able. We’ll also train differently for next year. I expected more of what the Two Oceans trail run was (Devil’s Peak route) – boy… was I wrong! This really was very tough but loved every minute of it! The trail maintenance was brilliant… felt totally safe on all swings, ladders and paths.
My legs are now Chicken Biltong.

The organizers and sponsors have done a brilliant job at making this one of the most enjoyable trail running weekends ever at a venue and on trails that are truly amazing and we at WildTrail feel extremely privileged to have been able to share in and be part of the very first Num-Num trail run. This will undoubtedly become one of the most sought after trail races in the years to come and we will definitely be back next year. – Debbie Agenbag, Wild Trails
